Establish what is actually permitted first
Cabin baggage has no single allowance applying to every trip. On flights, requirements depend on the booked offering and operating carrier. Lufthansa's current information distinguishes matters including fare and travel class. Check the actual booking before assuming a wheeled case is included. A personal item may form another category rather than an interchangeable name for the same bag.
Examine quantity, dimensions, weight and the contents rules applicable to your transport. Do not adopt another traveller's list without checking. Rail travel raises different questions, but luggage still needs to be manageable on the real route. A case you can barely carry independently does not become easier because the stay is short. Test handling as well as packing.
Choose around the actual weekend
Begin with activities rather than the bag. A town walk and ordinary dinner call for different clothing choices from an event with particular dress expectations. Decide whether extra equipment is really needed. A second bulky pair of shoes should have an identifiable purpose rather than being included merely because something might happen.
Select clothing that combines across the situations wanted without assuming every journey fits the same tiny bag. Weather and individual requirements may demand more space. A substantial wet outdoor section affects selection differently from a largely indoor programme. The aim is coherent use, not copying somebody else's minimum item count.
Lay intended clothing beside the bag and try packing it. If closure requires heavy pressure, there is little flexibility during travel. Documents and items needed en route should remain accessible without displaying the whole contents at every entrance. Usability during the journey matters alongside closed volume. Repack the difficult part before departure rather than assuming it will become easier later.
Include the routes in the luggage decision
Imagine the hardest stage: stairs, cobbles, a connection or the final walk to accommodation. Which bag can each person manage there? Two travellers need not use identical luggage for the outing to work. It should support independent handling as well as shared movement instead of leaving one person continually carrying everything.
Check storage and visitor rules too. A small bag permitted on a plane is not automatically admitted to every museum room. Hotel storage must fit the actual collection time. Less luggage may simplify movement without removing those conditions. Clarify the practical stages for the first and final days, when bags are most likely to remain with you.
Do not allocate the same spare space twice
If purchases or souvenirs are planned, consider them while packing. The same small remainder cannot simultaneously accommodate wet clothing and many new objects. For a short stay, bringing less may be more useful than treating an overfilled bag as a packing success. Keep some scope for ordinary changes rather than aiming for a perfect fit only at home.
The objective is not the smallest imaginable bag. It is a selection fitting the conditions and remaining manageable throughout the route. If more luggage is needed, check the appropriate transport arrangement beforehand. A realistic system is more comfortable than a minimal plan that has stopped working by the first morning. Judge it by the actual trip rather than the photograph of the packed case.
