Include the layers you will actually wear

A rain jacket can feel spacious over a thin top yet pull across the shoulders over the jumper you intend to use. Bring a representative clothing combination to the fitting. For city sightseeing with frequent indoor stops, that might be a shirt and light midlayer; for a cool outdoor break, a bulkier combination. The jacket should suit this realistic arrangement rather than every imaginable winter scenario.

Close the front zip completely and first examine the fit without a backpack. There should be room where your arms and torso move. A generous body can still have narrow upper sleeves. Conversely, sizing up considerably may leave the sleeves and hood difficult to adjust. Comparing two different cuts may be more revealing than simply comparing adjacent sizes.

In a blog about assessing jackets, GORE-TEX explicitly discusses fitting over suitable layers and moving while trying them on. That is a useful starting point, not a weather test of your own. A brief fitting reveals handling and movement; it cannot demonstrate long-term durability or performance in every rainfall condition.

Reproduce movements from an ordinary day

Raise both arms as if taking a photograph, reach towards an imaginary luggage rack, and sit on a chair. Notice whether the hem rides up, sleeves retreat, or the closed collar presses awkwardly against your chin. Check whether clothing underneath gathers where you do not want it. These small movements can reveal more for a day trip than standing motionless in front of a mirror.

Lean forward gently with the zip closed, as you might to tie a shoe. Observe whether the jacket restricts that movement. There is no need to perform an athletic exercise routine. The purpose is to reproduce actions you repeat during a normal outing and see how the garment follows them.

Adjust the hood with your usual glasses or hat

Put the hood on with the glasses or headwear you normally use. Adjust its controls individually and turn your head each way. Does the opening stay aligned with your view, or do you find yourself looking into fabric? A larger hood is not automatically more suitable; extra volume may be intended for equipment used in a different activity.

Check whether you can locate the adjusters yourself and whether loose cords hang around your face. The collar and hood need to work together. If the only comfortable setting requires leaving the front zip open, an important part of the fitting remains unresolved.

Repeat the checks with your daypack

Put on the backpack and set it as you would for the outing. Shoulder straps may now cross pocket openings or gather fabric in one place. Reach for the jacket pockets and try any ventilation openings you expect to use. High pockets might make sense with a particular pack without necessarily being more comfortable for your usual hand position.

Place representative objects in the pockets you need. A phone occupies an opening differently from an empty hand. Check whether you can operate the zip without pulling hard against the fabric. Do not infer a pocket's water protection from the appearance of its closure: that requires an explicit statement about the particular garment.

Taking turns with a shared daypack does not mean sharing the rain jacket must work too. Individually fitted jackets allow independent clothing adjustments. A shared spare garment should not be treated as a replacement for checking the fit each person actually needs.

Consider packing and care before choosing

A jacket that spends most of the day in your backpack needs an appropriate space there. Check its actual folded dimensions and whether the intended storage arrangement is easy for you to manage. An extremely tight bundle is not automatically convenient if every unpacking and repacking operation becomes lengthy. A wet jacket also needs different treatment on the return journey from clean, dry clothing.

Finally, read the care label and information for the exact model. Washing, drying, and any recommended after-treatment vary. A technical material name cannot replace those instructions. Choose a cut whose movement, handling, and care requirements suit your ordinary outings; the highest figure on a specification sheet cannot settle these questions.
