Do not assume access to the town hall
The most important preparation currently involves correcting older expectations. In October 2026, Visit Leuven reports that the town hall cannot be visited during renovation through 2029 inclusive. It also describes scaffolding and a covered facade until summer 2027. Photographs of the unobstructed building therefore may not represent conditions on your travel date.
That does not make the city unsuitable for a trip for two. It changes the emphasis. Use Grote Markt as a geographical starting point and verify which other architectural visits are actually possible. Do not book a stay around a town-hall tour without reading the current notice.
For a guided product, establish what is included. A city walk can pass the town hall without entering. A building's name in the description does not automatically mean interior access.
Give the compact day one real priority
A concrete alternative to the closed town hall is the University Library at Ladeuzeplein. Decide whether a confirmed library or tower visit appeals, then arrange the current admission. The square also makes a useful starting point for a university-themed section that does not depend on entering every academic building.
Naamsestraat connects several historic university addresses. Give it a street section of its own before continuing towards the Great Beguinage. Houses, small bridges, and the Dijle change the scale of the walk there. The buildings now accommodate people including students and researchers: remain on public routes and respect the residential surroundings rather than seeking supposedly hidden interiors.
For different interests, the day can therefore have a clear shape: an agreed library visit, followed by Naamsestraat together and a longer period in the Beguinage. If you prefer no fixed interior appointment, begin outside at Ladeuzeplein and give the saved time to the southern section. This provides an actual alternative to a town-hall programme rather than a list of unverified building entrances.
Keep the central Grote Markt available for a separate pause instead of repeatedly passing through it between every stop. The library, university street, and Beguinage already provide a direction. Returning north for departure is easier to understand when it is one deliberate final movement rather than several small reversals throughout the afternoon.
Consider the complete rail journey
Check the route from the station to accommodation and onwards to the centre. If combining Leuven with another Belgian city, the move itself is part of the programme: collect bags, reach the station, and arrive again somewhere else. Another city does not come free of time costs.
For a one-night stay, keeping Leuven open may work better than adding half a major-city visit. Decide whether this is intended as a stay or only a stop between places.
Recheck the official town-hall page shortly before travel. Construction stages can change. Base the plan on confirmed access and leave unverified interiors as possibilities rather than treating them as existing parts of the day.
