What the extra night actually changes
A day trip and an overnight stay are not simply the same route at a different cost. Staying adds an evening and another morning without adapting both to a return elsewhere. That can give two travellers more room to choose. It does not guarantee deserted streets.
The official city information describes a compact historic centre while noting paving, steps, and significant changes of level, particularly towards the castle gardens. Short distances therefore do not adequately describe the effort. Decide which sections you both actually want to walk.
The first arrival walk can remain in the lower town. Give the castle area a separate section next day if a substantial visit matters. The extra morning need not immediately become a full second excursion.
Arrival is more than a short map arrow
Check whether you arrive by train, scheduled coach, or car. The official FAQ distinguishes the railway and bus stations and notes distance and elevation on the rail approach. A walk without luggage and the same journey carrying two bags are different tasks.
The historic centre is a pedestrian zone with particular vehicle rules. City information states that visitors and overnight guests cannot simply drive inside. Do not infer vehicle permission from a central room reservation. Establish lawful parking and the actual luggage route with the accommodation.
A central room can shorten evening journeys while involving paving or stairs at arrival. A room elsewhere may offer simpler bag access but a longer later walk. Compare these benefits through the real arrival point rather than the label central.
If planning a local connection or taxi from the station, identify the meeting place and onward address. Avoid making both people wait with luggage while searching for an entrance that was never clarified.
The castle is not one undifferentiated ticket
For the castle area, identify the experience you want. Accessible exterior areas, a tower, and a guided interior are different commitments. Check each relevant opening and reservation arrangement with the responsible operator.
Choose through interest and effort. Both may want the town view while only one wants an extensive interior tour. A shared section followed by a precise reunion can work, or consciously select only what matters to both.
A walk towards the gardens should not automatically be added after a long visit. The ascent is part of the experience. Visitors expecting a compact town to mean effortless walking may otherwise encounter a demanding afternoon despite short map distances.
Leave the evening some room
An overnight stay permits dinner without another long-distance journey afterwards. Choose an area with a sensible accommodation return and leave time for a short walk. Another booked evening product is unnecessary to justify the night.
Use the last morning for a route that can shorten or a pause near bags. A major new appointment can turn the extra time straight back into departure pressure. Include packing and travel to the actual stop.
Seeing fewer attractions than an intensive day trip is not contradictory. Staying can be a choice to experience the same spaces at different times. Use that time instead of immediately filling it with more distant destinations.
