Let water provide the connecting subject
Begin at Rathausplatz and choose the Lech quarter and Red Gate area as a sequence. The local tourism organisation uses this connection in explaining the water heritage. You need not reproduce an entire tour to build an intelligible walk from it. The main change is from a broad square to smaller water and street spaces.
On a map, channels may look like extra lines between buildings. On site, consider how streets and houses relate to them. Choose a public position where both of you can look without obstructing movement. An urban channel is neither a play feature nor an invitation to leave permitted areas for a closer waterside position. Let the actual public route determine your view.
A channel view need not explain everything at once
The official channel information discusses the Vorderer Lech and its relationship with the Red Gate waterworks. For a first visit, locating named features on the map provides a useful starting point. Every technical relationship need not become clear immediately. A question about how water passes through the quarter can encourage more attention than collecting many dates.
For deeper technical interest, check a currently offered tour or museum visit. An outdoor route does not establish access to the water towers. Conversely, an interior need not be followed by another extensive subject programme. Leave time afterwards for something requiring less explanation. Consider whether a shorter visit would preserve interest better than a rushed sequence.
Where interests differ, the first shared walk can inform a decision. One traveller discovering an interest in the technical story can choose a visit deliberately. The other need not absorb every detail at exactly the same pace. A clear meeting point and shared pause can connect the two approaches without turning the rest of the day into reluctant accompaniment.
Allow the Red Gate to be an ending
The Red Gate area can finish the walk rather than becoming another intermediate stop. Check the connection towards accommodation or departure from that actual endpoint. Another quarter or additional water installation does not have to fit into the remainder. Keep the chosen relationship intact rather than extending automatically.
If eating afterwards, select the place according to the route remaining. A longer central pause can work as well as finishing near the endpoint. Augsburg becomes intelligible here as a relationship between square, former working quarter and water use. Completing every publicly listed heritage station in one day is unnecessary. Leave another technical visit for a separate occasion if it deserves sustained attention.
